The distinctive refined color palette and laconic shapes of traditional Japanese Home Style meet extraordinary design solutions in these three inspiring home concepts. The most seductive of our three interior examples, our first Japanese home design is large and luxurious. Many traditional elements of Japanese design come to the forefront here but above all with a creative modern twist. Our second concept is layered with contemporary craftsmanship and a reimagined classic to achieve an elegant combination of style, class and sophistication. Our final tour takes place inside a compact modern home where unique and strange pieces bring a fresh and fun atmosphere. Prominent silhouettes build a sculptural thread between elegant Shōji displays and fashionable motifs.

The large and luxurious living space of our first Japanese home interior has end-to-end glass across opposite aspects. The frontal openings create a pure stream of nature from the solar garden in the south to the shady narrow courtyard in the north. When the glass is removed, there is a happy flow of air for an outdoor experience under a cool cover.

Tea room design occupies the same space as the living room. The tea table rises shallowly from the wooden floor, in a Horigotatsu table fashion that allows legs to be extended in a niche below. The traditional concept gets a modern twist with sharp lines and an elegant style.

Genuine tatami mats line the bedroom and living room, which not only adds softness underfoot but serves to soften the acoustics of the large and high room.

The dining room doubles as a home library with built-in bookshelves along the entire wall.

Teppanyaki layout makes dynamic sociable setting.

An inner courtyard is surrounded by terraces on three sides, offering places of sunlight and shade.

There is another, smaller yard attached to the home workshop so that the homeowner can feel as if they are in the serenity of nature even while working.

Outdoor overhead lights cast a golden glow over the wood-clad home exterior and over wooden overhangs that surround the courtyards.

The master bedroom is a zen inspired design with a close and tangible connection to the courtyard. The bed design is a unique frame with attached shelves and a fixed home workspace behind the headboard. Large-format, black stone tiles extend along with the bedroom to an open plan ensuite.

Inside the en-suite bathroom, a beautiful wooden bathtub shines in the sunlight.

A matching wooden bench is lined up along with the tub, creating falconry for clothes and toilets.

A hot tub lies between rocks to achieve a natural look.

In this modern Japanese interior design, a padded modular sofa crosses a floor of traditional tatami mats.

The most striking part of the open plan living space is two boldly oversized dining hangers. Despite their sheer size, their white paper shades give them a light aesthetic that complements Shoji screen doors.

Linen table runners dress a simple wooden dining table.

A shallow fruit bowl makes an understated table top. See more ideas for modern fruit trees.

Our final interior design and CGI images are from a small Tokyo apartment inspired by Japanese aesthetics.

The background of Shoji screens is overshadowed by strange Etc. Lounge Chair by Jan Ekselius for Swedish brand Artilleriet.

An extraordinary faux fur sofa makes a fabulous statement on the opposite side of the lounge area.

The striking trio of lights above the coffee table is Formakami hangers by Jaime Hayón for & Tradition.

Behind the extraordinary sofa design, a cork wall makes a textured background.

Black stucco and black window frames create a dark contrast with the pale furniture.

A trendy runner-shaped dining table draws another dark element into the living room.

Two glossy black dining room hangers hang low over the black wood and concrete table.

A single kitchen follows a lighter palette with natural wood base units and fresh white tops. A rough gray concrete back and a matching counter cut the kitchen, highlighted by an LED ribbon.

The white minimalist bedroom acquires a character from a circular niche in the stucco over the bed.

Small, black bedroom hangers and two matching black metal liter units flank the bed with extreme black accents. A majestic, white-covered Bonsai tree sculpture tops a tall stack of adjacent vegetable material. Scattered cushions make for comfortable reading corners on each side of the room.

Shoji doors give the wardrobe a hint of ancient Japan.

The platform bed puts a light wood tone on the clear white bedroom rug.

Gray bedding coordinates with the polished concrete floor. Black trail lights echo the black window frames.

In the bathroom, a round mirror connects with the curves of a runner-shaped vanity unit. The vanity hanger matches the style of the bedrooms to achieve a cohesive aesthetic throughout.

Inside the shower, a unique backlight wall feature adds a mysterious, icy sheen to the dark and grumpy gray stucco. Perimeter LEDs add a wash of practical task lighting into the lath enclosure.

Floor plan.
