Without the right lighting, accents and strong silhouettes, a dark interior design can be blurry or simply depressing. With thoughtful accents, the dark decor is mysterious, exciting and profound. Thoughtful lighting focuses on highlights in the room, creating bright views of style and wonder. To illustrate, we present inspiring home interiors that offer two contrasting alternatives to set a tastefully dark decor. Home design number one is saturating ebony black with luxurious introductions of mood lighting where you would least expect it. Our second tour takes us to a smaller apartment where the decor is slightly lightened to a charcoal and graphite combination that builds a comfortable cocoon.

In our first inspiring example of modern dark interior design, a large modular sofa layout forms an island of deep comfort in the center of the shadows.

One side of the sectional sofa composition is turned into a projector screen that illuminates an entire wall when in use.

The dark, projectable living room gives an authentic cinematic experience with low-level lighting and a quiet atmosphere. Light streaks thread thinly around the edges of the room and up a small staircase to guide a safe step.

A single chair stands against the sofa to round out the furniture arrangement. Its designer shape is highlighted under the brightness of the projector screen; a prominent shadow is cast at the foot of the neat chair, which enlarges its presence in the spacious room.

In front of the modular sofa, a modern coffee table has book storage in its base. Part of its surface is finished in white marble, which highlights the piece within the grumpy black environment.

A modern fireplace is unusually located on the side of the room, where it blazes under a striking lightbox feature. A unique floor lamp carries light into a dark corner nearby.

Small table lamps dot the black decoration with brief moments of illumination.

Intense light streaks fall on black wood grain panels to form a lighted feature wall. The attention-grabbing installation effectively balances the brightness of the opposite chimney.

A side table fits conveniently into the modular sofa layout.

Unlike the rest of the shaded interior, glass blocks bring glorious natural daylight flooding on a modern staircase design. Black footsteps seem to float lightly to the second floor.

A glass wall separates the living room from a chic tea room design.

Inside the tea room, a solid backlit wall features an untouched collection of tea paraphernalia.

In the kitchen, a white island counter lies brightly in the black scheme under focused spotlights. Brown dining chairs add notes of welcoming warmth.

In our second dark interior design, the sectional sofa divides the living room from an open kitchen dining room.

Behind the gray sofa, a bright red smeg fridge makes a boldly colorful statement under the kitchen island.

The bright flames of a modern fireplace are moody contrasts of a luxurious gray marble fireplace.

A small side table slides neatly up next to the gray couch, where a mature indoor plant adds height, texture, and color relief.

Gray cloths swim on the dark herringbone floor.

A large carpet sets a lighter tone against the rich floor treatment.

Beneath the island, the kitchen floor treatment stands out in a lighter tone than the rest of the room to create a clear zoning.

Black kitchen units form a recommended frame around a dark marble back and country house.

Integrated appliances and black accessories merge into the shady kitchen design.

LED strips clearly draw attention to open kitchen shelves.

The extension of a dining table is executed in a wood-effect finish, which is completed by the floor of the living room.

A modern fruit bowl makes a simple and functional table top.

The gray granite tile that underlines the kitchen is repeated in the home entrance to separate the free space.

A backlit full-length mirror lightens the small entrance.

A plush entrance bench sits in front of the mirror to form a wardrobe against a row of built-in wardrobes.

The bedroom is a cocoon of gray-gray upholstery, gray stone and dark wood grain.

The shading scheme is carefully lit with low mood lighting to promote rest and good sleep.

Linear pendant light and rotating wall light provide read light.

A gray bed and matching bedding melt into the dark bedroom decor.

Sunken LED strips highlight the perimeter of the gray bathroom. A black wall-hung toilet casts a disconnected shadow that emphasizes its floating effect.

Instead of bathroom lights, an additional strip of LED glow is emitted under the large vanity mirror to fall onto the bathroom sink and counter.

The atmospheric lighting scheme also continues inside the incoming shower area, where dark black shower fixtures sink into the shadows. Black-framed, smoky shower screen perfectly complements the dark aesthetic.
