On a rocky Hillside House In Indonesia, Batu Layar, Indonesia, a steeply contoured plot of 1600 square meters has become the new home of a young couple and their three children. Created by Wahana Architects, the home has 1200 square meters to build an area that beds comfortably in its contoured environment. With a rise of about 25 meters from the main road, the Hill House gets terrific views over an ocean panorama. Mature trees and shrubs grow all around the ground, creating abundant green cocoon from higher ground. A swimming pool aligns with the open horizon, along with a wide sun terrace and outdoor living areas. Stay tuned for floor plans and video travel.

Rumah Mewah Di Tebing, or The Hill House, stands on a difficult piece of land. Here, the architects focused on maximizing the construction site to create a comfortable, spacious family home. The level at which the main volume of the building should stand was guided by the potential to realize an infinite sea view.

The modern exterior is a linear composition of concrete and glass. Three building blocks operate around a large swimming pool and deck, where outdoor residences benefit most from the hot weather.

Two of the horizontal volumes are positioned to receive the ultimate ocean views, while the third volume is located diagonally to capitalize on the narrower perimeter at the rear.

The functional outdoor space is designed to encourage an indoor-outdoor living experience, where there is freedom of movement between different areas of the home through fresh air and sunshine.

The pool seat is an atmospheric setting at night, illuminated by niche spotlights that are tucked into a concrete overhang above it.

A timber-framed overhang protrudes from the main living volume of the house, where it provides shade over floor-to-ceiling windows.

The pool extends across the entire width of the home and wraps around the deck in a shallow L-shape.

Established trees and shrubs grow densely around the property, growing an abundant green environment that provides privacy and peace to the home.

Wooden perimeter walls keep the sun deck completely deprived of peripheral areas.

Water plays a continuous role throughout the home, filling reflective pools and creating softly undulating music. Inner decks “float” above the water surface in large rafts and narrow treads.

Sinu trees push up through gaps made in the roof of the building, where they are content to seek the sun.

The wooden ceiling treatment in the living room is complemented by a solid wooden coffee table. Decorative vases add blue on the table that ties in with the ocean view.

A simple beige carpet contrasts lightly with the dark tile.

In the TV room, a cassock sofa is focused on a large walnut media. A tripod floor lamp is paired with an elegant chair and footstool set to form a comfortable reading night. This family room is inserted as a transition area between the more formal living-dining space and the private domain that contains the bedrooms. This area is also linked to the study, which makes it a center of action.

Due to the contoured nature of the site, the climb from the entrance to the highest point in the structure is great. Entering a dramatic cave-like passage, the climb begins with a ramp to the settlement.

The circulation around and through the property is a semi-outdoor path, bordered with rustic stone walls and overhanging plant beds.

Comfortable seats nest in narrow architectural corners.

Glass walls allow the interior spaces to feel a fluid connection with the outdoor living spaces.

With impressive sea views to the west, the architects were challenged to deal with the intensity of solar radiation.

Spaces between the architecture and the outer stone wall promote cooling air circulation around the property.

Vertical panels are installed to shade the home from direct sunlight.

A decoratively cut screen mimics the stone walls at the front entrance.

The thin build-up allows for efficient, natural air circulation. Glass walls and glass railings facilitate a barrier-free light fixture.

Bedrooms are modestly large, elegant spaces, with a focus on concrete and wood finishes.

Heavy drapes block the early morning sun.

The master bathroom is large and luxurious. Glossy gray stone slabs, cover the wide bathroom floor, dress a main wall, and wrap around a centrally located bathtub. The tub enjoys a spectacular view over the ocean and the surrounding forest. A double sink vanity unit is hidden away around a corner where vanity mirrors can be easily mounted on the wall.

A third floor plan, including the pool and smaller reflective pools located in and around the home.

Fourth floor plan and mezzanine. A prayer chapel occupies the roof, accessed by a landscaped staircase at the back of the house.

Section drawing. Here, we see how the home beds comfortably enter their sloping terrain.

The top half of this room is very black and dark, while the bottom half is very light and white. The floor is dark too, but a very different color from the other two. The contrast in colors seems to give this room three levels.
