A dreamy, nature-affected home stands on the riverbank of a small village in Hoi An ancient city of Quang Nam province, Vietnam, elegantly designed by lequang architects. Surrounded by a typical agricultural landscape, the 180-square-meter home was designed to quietly merge into the greenery of the local landscape. The homeowner is an environmental expert, and she wanted her son to grow up in a natural environment, and benefit from the living education that this experience brings. This house serves as a quiet base for such a way of life and also for the life of birds and insects thanks to a serene courtyard where small creatures can visit and find shelter among the bushes.

The beautiful courtyard design forms the beating heart of this peaceful home design. Glass walls open each of the living spaces to the soul a soothing sight of sun-stained green foliage, wild birds and visiting butterflies.

The wooden framed double glass doors are fully retracted to allow the interior and exterior spaces to be seamlessly connected. With the courtyard at the core of all living spaces, walking naturally finds its way through nature several times a day.

A deep blue accent color paints a rich coherence across all interior and exterior living spaces. The color creates a wonderfully contrasting background for the bright and diverse wood tones of the doors, furniture and trim.

A traditional regional rug lays a burnt orange base for the living area. A large and striking wall piece establishes a colored connection with the floor covering. A modern sofa refreshes the decorative palette with cool upholstery.

There is a vertical piano on the other side of the home living room where the homeowner and her son can ring the keys during the breeze from the connected courtyard. An elegant wooden and rotating lounge chair sits listening to the presentation.

The homeowner, Ms. Giang, sees her home as a mini-community center where she can arrange meetings with her environmental group.

Ms. Giang also arranges meetings with her neighbors here in this nature-affected home, to grow and nurture strong community bonds. A communal rural village lifestyle is what she hoped for when he planned his relocation here from the crowded city of Saigon.

A display of ceramic flower vases marks a convenient shoe storage buried beneath the edge of the courtyard.

Outdoor lights create an atmospheric glow across the foliage in the courtyard as night falls.

Wooden slatted ceilings create a comfortable cover over the interior spaces. A kitchen peninsula and elegant bar stools provide a comfortable dining area.

The ground floor rooms of the house are raised around the edge of the courtyard and include multifunctional elements …

… The floor of the main dining room also serves as a long bench for the garden.

Small raised beds arrange the garden as an interactive space to change plants and engage in light work for happily during remote hours outside.

The floor bench is a discreetly attractive place where neighbors come to chat at the edge of the courtyard garden.

The sunken dining room also serves as a place for work and collaborative teamwork. Natural rattan roller blinds can be deployed to offer extra shade when and where needed.

As the front entrance leads directly into the courtyard, visitors to the home immediately present the spiral organization of overlapping space. In the design, the house first inspired the traditional shop layout, as seen in Hoi An ancient city. This concept has developed into a coiled compound, such as a helical shell, that makes it resistant to flooding. The result is an immediate impressive first and lasting impression.

The upper gallery overlooks the courtyard and entrance through slender metal balustrade and beautiful wooden pillars. Inexpensive local materials were used for the attractive modern building.

Pre-engineered steel forms the structure on the ground floor, leaning against thick walls. The exposed structure of the house becomes a form of visual expression.

Internal and external boundaries of space are transformed and changed as they are retranslated within different everyday scenes.

The literal shape of the areas changes to accommodate the activities of the homeowner, her son and their visiting neighbors. The mix of spaces are just moments tied around the garden rectangle, which is always the main focus of the home and its changing purpose.

In a distorted site perimeter, the rectangular garden transforms the mass into a living being. In the words of the architect, “The house is like a tree, it creates different spaces, different shades, it becomes beautiful not only by the parts exposed to the sunlight but also in the parts that fade into the darkness. I think that the unification of a tree is how a ‘structure’ becomes an ‘architecture’. ”

This “rolled up” version of the traditional storehouse sees the space unfold gradually higher from the center, with the high retaining perimeter wall effective for holding the heavy rain. In contrast, the ancient storefront layout is linear with a series of courtyards that unwantedly caught the rain inside.
