Designed with family time in mind, this Brazilian summer house is decorated with tropical touches for a relaxed holiday atmosphere. The homeowners set only a few important guidelines for the project, with the main desire being for a space in which the family could socialize and spend more time together. The agile architectural team at NV Architecture devised an open arrangement that would give family members an easy and lasting bond in the social living spaces. Other areas of the residence have been created to maintain a comfortable level of privacy and practicality in the family resort. Stay until the end of the tour to see full plans and a video tour.

This contemporary Brazilian summer house is located in the city of Florianópolis. A green landscape densely surrounds its perimeter in wild and tropical eruptions.

The concrete brutalist exterior is interspersed with areas of rustic stone, which helps the home design blend in with its natural environment. A wide driveway leads to the front of the house, creating plenty of width for two cars to easily cross. A parallel sidewalk strikes a straight line to the front door.

Balconies project from the top floor of the Brazilian summer home, providing outdoor seating and panoramic views. Tall palm trees offer a light screen of the driveway, providing owners with a sense of privacy without blocking the view.

Open-frame concrete canopies overhang outdoor areas to provide some shade, making them more comfortable under the Brazilian sunshine.

One of the concrete canopies serves as a mount for a hanging chair on the private terrace at the back of the house. A rectangular pool flows along with cool blue inviting waters. The house wraps around the pool deck in a protective L-shaped layout. Tropical plants and the front fence enclose the remaining two sides.

Glass doors are retracted to connect the main dwellings with the pool terrace, creating many opportunities for family interactions, regardless of the activity in which each family member is involved. The open flow encourages an indoor-outdoor lifestyle without limits.

The glass walls bring soothing views of the flower garden.

The green garden views color much of the formal living room, where the panorama pours through walls from floor to ceiling windows and a unique glass mailbox along the foot of the TV wall. The beautiful views are reflected in a pair of large decorative mirrors behind the couch as well, which interrupts a rich wood-paneled wall.

The TV wall makes a rustic statement in stone. Small indoor plants bring a touch to the garden inside.

A sociable seating arrangement pulls around the TV. Two wooden chairs sit on one side of the lounge chair, two brown leather chairs on the other, and a contrasting cool gray sofa extends the length in between.

The open layout continues to flow around into the kitchen in a large L-shaped formation. Treatment of a wooden ceiling warmly connects the kitchen and dining room, and a white light track runs crystal between the two.

The master bedroom is endowed with its own large balcony area.

Wooden shutters block the morning sun to facilitate a longer rest.

Pot plants bring the garden up.

Because this is a summer house, sunlight handling and ventilation were key.

Solar photovoltaic panels were also included in the design so that the home would require the least amount of electricity, and a cistern was installed to capture and use rainwater.

Sliding doors make the bedroom and balcony into one space.

A single platform bed commands the center of the room, where there is space left to surround it. A television and media console are placed on an attractive stone feature wall at the foot of the bed.

A small floor lamp and simple side tables line the bed. Discretion and easy care were some of the main goals in this luxurious home design.

Doors on each side of the bedroom provide a breeze for thermal comfort.

A corridor of mirrored closets makes a corridor of light.

Integrated spaces and uses increase opportunities for interaction. The sun terrace includes an outdoor kitchen and an outdoor dining area. A comfortable outdoor lounge with a soft sofa makes it a welcome place for family members to sit and chat while dinner is cooked, or much later in the evening.

Heavy wooden shutters rotate on their axis in the main corridor, to give relief to the bright environmental conditions.

Elegant snapshots of the interior area are exposed to the outside environment, like this unique floor lamp in the living room.

With the homeowners ’demand for home design that would encourage family time, the vision for this project was clear. An open plan residential place with easy flow into outdoor spaces was the solution for a sociable summer.
