Abundant greenery surrounds this peaceful Japanese house in Hiroshima city, created by Hayato Komatsu Architects. The house belongs to its designer, who embraced the irregularities of the site, which is shaded by a large tunnel and retaining wall that penetrates Mt. Eba. At first glance, the site and surroundings seemed undesirable. However, the dense greenery, which overflows from the landscape, takes away the typical urban atmosphere. Instead, the obscure location has created an opportunity for home design that connects the luxurious environment with modern architecture. Living spaces were raised 4m above ground level to look at the view, where a complementary relationship between the new garden and surrounding specimens comes together as one spectacular scene.<\/p>\n

The union between mountain and architecture changes the urban landscape as it embraces the spreading surrounding greenery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Constructed in an arc, the architecture eoesas the rise of the mountain, and the cavity of the tunnel, that crosses it. Elevated gardens reconstruct the spill of plants over the mountaintop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The unique home design successfully extends the beauty of the natural landscape instead of interrupting it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The front entrance is placed inside two of the highest fins that form the vertebrae of the house. The fins protrude forward to build privacy around the door and windows of the house, and create shade from direct sunlight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In the modern Japanese home, we find a light-filled open layout that unfolds under the warmth of exposed wooden ceiling beams. The airspace was designed as a place for a family to gather and spend quality time together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To connect the hall with the best views of the surrounding environment, the hall had to be raised more than four meters from the ground surface. Entire glass walls open the living room to the green panorama of the mountainside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A terrace was built around the second floor boundary, on which lay a plant-filled boundary defined as the \u201cgarden\u201d of this extraordinary home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The garden terrace is where the relationship between environment and architecture really takes over, as the view of the garden overlaps with the farther panorama to form the perception of a deep landscape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The elevated garden has a gantry structure of different depths. It protrudes in a southeasterly direction, where the trees become sunlit. The branches grow a soft screen between the interior of the house and its neighbors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The living room is soaked slightly below the height of the terrace floor, which gives it a pleasantly covered atmosphere. An L-shaped sectional sofa pulls around the edge of the living room, under the glass. Relaxing two-tone upholstery connects with the cool gray concrete decorative elements and the square coffee table, while a brown leather section completes the warm wood tone in the room.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Black steel window frames and black powdered balustrade compensate for the bright golden warmth of the wooden elements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A crowd of planters scatter through the second floor terrace, adding abundant layers. Storm lanterns glow softly among the low hanging leaves at night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Behind the kitchen island, a wall of glass cabinets reflects the sunlight and the garden view.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Every small corner of the home is inhabited by vegetation. A hanging planter adds greenery to the small powder plant, and a container of falling leaves softens the void that vertically connects the entrance to the second floor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
